Dye Adventure!
Lookee what I did today! (Aside from the brain numbing exam cram)
I had a yarn dyeing adventure...

1. Setup. 2 1/2 hanks of Patons Classic Wool

2.Koolaid: supposed to be sugar-free, but guess what? They snuck sugar in there!!

3. I used Cherry, Grape, & Ice Blue (Lemon Raspberry)... my house still smells.

A mixture I made up... kinda plum-brown... we'll see if I can find a project that'll make it look good.

So I used the sugary Koolaid anyways, and as long as your water is hot when the dye goes in it wasn't too sticky. I just double rinsed my hanks.

Well I'm off to bed.... 1 more study day till final exams!!! Gah!

Those look great!

I did yarn (sock) dyeing once...
But it was with chem-dyes, so it wasn't great on the lungs.

Have you thought about finding local plants to dye your yarn with?
The same woman as the one I dyed socks with did that.
Came up with some pretty funky colors!

the plant thing seems like a lotta work & I wouldn't know where to start, maybe beets? Maybe I'll try when I'm on a break from school :-P The koolaid was really easy and quick (and non toxic) so I might just stick to it & try out other colours and colour combos.
You dyed sock yarn?? Did she knit them into socks for you?

I think you can get books from the library about the plants. As I recall it didn't seem like a lot of work, maybe the plant of choice in some cheese cloth. Boil the water it's in and presto! (at least that's how I remember her telling me).

Yea! sock yarn! well... LOL they were already knitted... but they look pretty cool! It was way back in the day. I still have the socks though! They look pretty funky when you dye them when they are already knited :P

Yea the coral yarn was a sock and a half that I used to test if the sugary koolaid would still work. I ripped them out after & now I have the nice yarn. But the colour wasn't completely even when they were in sock form so it looked kinda funky. I want to try plant dyeing, would you do it with me some time?? Maybe I could teach you to knit something simple and small like wristwarmers with the dyed yarn once we're done??

I really like the plum-brown! I'm sure you'll find something beautiful to make out of it.. maybe next Fall, it's a perfect fall colour. :)

Really? Thanks, I am glad you like it. I kind of do, but I am not sure what to make of it. I think I'll bring it to my lys to find a perfect complementary colour for it since it is only about 225 yards.
Maybe some fairaisle mittens for the fall??

Yeah I think fair isle mitts would be perfect! Maybe with a tweedy tan or something!

ooh yes. tweed is a good good idea. I have never done fairaisle mitts or even complex fairaisle before and I've been knitting for 6 years! I need to do fairaisle.

I reccomend the koolaid dyeing tutorial by knitty, & the sock yarn tutorial by eunny jang!
NOTE: If you can only find the sugar koolaid packets it still works, but you need to put your yarn in cold water, heat it up in the microwave, then remove the hot yarn & add the dye and then keep heating it in 2-3 min interwvals. This way the sugar doesnt get too gooey. Oh & lots of rinsing
:-P
